This level of editing is recommended primarily for manuscripts needing attention to organization, presentation, and sentence structure to clarify meaning and smooth the flow of the text. Mechanical issues are addressed in the later copy edit stage. The substantive edit may address any of the following as needed.
- Suggest improvements to the organization and presentation of material to enhance the reader's experience with the content. This may include:
- Recommendations for recasting tables, charts, or figures
- Recommendations for adjusting the format used to present the material
- Recommendations to add or delete sections of the manuscript
- Recommendations to reorder some of the material
- Identify information that may need citations and/or permissions
- Check formatting of references cited
- Flag terms or phrases that may convey an unintended meaning, such as:
- Bias
- Negative or offensive tone
- Alternative message or implication for some within the intended audience
- Identify inconsistencies or contradictions within the text, such as in:
- Concepts
- Characterization details
- Plot points
- Suggest more extensive rewording and restructuring of sentences to:
- Clarify meaning
- Tighten prose
- Smooth the flow of text
